MA-1 jacket is a type of pilot jacket originally introduced by the U.S. Air Force in the 1950s. This jacket is known for its unique design and style, typically made of nylon material with a ribbed collar, cuffs, and hem. The MA-1 jacket was initially designed to replace the wool jackets used in cold high-altitude flights.
It features some distinctive characteristics, including elastic bands at the cuffs and hem, the iconic pocket design, and the classic orange lining for increased visibility in emergencies.
The MA-1 is a classic with a knit collar made of wool that fits snugly around the neck and is warm enough not to interfere with the pilot's ability to wear a helmet and parachute gear. When on the ground, unzipped, excess body heat can be quickly drained away, and when airborne, zipped up, it can be immediately warmed up with a high-visibility orange lining, so that when the pilot escapes from an airplane crash landing, he can simply turn his MA1 jacket inside out, and he'll instantly have an emergency life-saving jacket!
